Cijevna Canyon is one of Montenegro’s most significant geological and geomorphological areas. Its present appearance is the result of long-term geological processes and erosion by the Cijevna River, which cut its channel through massive limestone rocks over millions of years, creating an impressive canyon with steep cliffs and numerous karst landforms.

The geological bedrock consists mainly of Mesozoic carbonate rocks, primarily limestone and dolomite, belonging to the Outer Dinarides.

The area features pronounced karst morphology, with numerous fissures, sinkholes, scree slopes and rocky ridges. Particularly valuable are the high canyon walls, which in places reach several hundred metres and testify to the intense geological processes that shaped the area.

The geological diversity of Cijevna Canyon is not only an important part of Montenegro’s natural heritage but also a valuable resource for scientific research, education and geotourism. Understanding the geological history of the area helps explain the natural processes that shaped its unique landscape and rich biodiversity.
